EPISD November Teacher of the Month

The Eagle Pass Independent School District has partnered with local businesses throughout our city to highlight the Teacher of the Month program, which honors educators who have made a difference in our community.  The program recognizes outstanding kindergarten, elementary, junior high, and high school teachers in Eagle Pass, Texas.

Ms. Vanessa Gonzalez of Robert E. Lee Elementary has been selected as the “Teacher of the Month” for the month of November.  Her highly effective, caring, and enthusiastic attitude personifies what it is to be an excellent educator. Vanessa instructs her second graders with fun and effective lessons that target the student experience that help them develop an appreciation for learning.  She makes concepts and skills come to life.  When she isn’t teaching her second grade class, Ms. Gonzalez volunteers in her spare time.  She sponsors the Lee basketball team and actively participates in PTO.  She is a true advocate for student success and well-being.  Great teachers like Vanessa challenge, motivate, and inspire. It is those characteristics that have awarded her the title of Teacher of the Month.

A segment will appear on iVision throughout the month of November detailing many more accomplishments of Ms. Gonzalez.  This month she will also appear on community media, news publications and the EPISD website throughout November 2014.

A teacher will be selected each month through June 2015 for a total of nine (9) honorees.  The “Teacher of the Month” will be chosen based on educational achievements in the classroom, community contributions and innovativeness of the program/techniques used by the teacher. The “Teacher of the Month” will receive a certificate of recognition and will be featured on iVision, local media news, news publications and radio broadcasting.  Additionally, each “Teacher of the Month” will receive donations from local businesses.

This month we would like to thank our sponsors, Walmart, Chilies, Ancira Ford – Eagle Pass and Ashley Furniture.

BOOK IT!

BOOK IT! Program Honors National Young Readers Week November 10-14 with PRINCIPAL CHALLEGE

On November 10-14, Pizza Hut and its BOOK IT! Program will continue its tradition of challenging principals across the United States to become shining examples for literacy and the BOOK IT! Program.  This year the challenge continues by choosing one day to read all day long, from first bell to last during “National Young Readers Week” in fun, unique and engaging ways.

The Principal Challenge is part of Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Programs.  National Young Readers Week is a celebration that is an annual event co-founded by Pizza Hut and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.  One lucky elementary school principal will win 101 copies for their library of the ninth book in the Wimpy Kid series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul which releases on November 4th.   Jeff Kinney, author of the Wimpy Kid books, will personally autograph one of the books for the principal who read their heart out.

This year, Principal Rosanna Rios from Nellie Mae Glass will be reading to the entire school from first bell to last on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014 to celebrate BOOK IT!’s 30th birthday and to raise awareness for the importance of literacy and generate a passion for reading among young people.

In addition to National Young Reader’s Week, Pizza Hut is offering exciting elements this year for current BOOK IT! kids including a BOOK IT! Alumni program, passport to $30k college plan sweepstakes, the first ever BOOK IT! mobile app and a free custom online story from Jeff Kinney.

STATISTICS:
More than 630,000 classrooms annually use The BOOK IT! Program

Over the past 30 years, Pizza Hut has rewarded more than 60 million students for reading more than 54 billion minutes

Congratulations to the Eagle Pass Education Foundation (EPEF) recipients on being awarded grant money for use in their classrooms. A special "thank you" to all the  applicants for submitting their projects for approval. These applicants demonstrated enthusiasm in improving their students learning achievement.
The grants are part of the EPEF's annual program, in which proposals for innovative classroom programs are selected to receive funding through a competitive process.

The non-profit organization formed in 2011, recognizes educators’ efforts to fund innovation.

EPEF received double the amount of applications this year, a testament both to its continued growth and the needs of Eagle Pass Schools.  All of the funding requests were compelling and worthy of attention, which made the selection process that much more challenging.  Those chosen represent EPEF’s best efforts to fund a broad range of innovative student experiences.
