Kirchner Named Blue Ribbon School for the 2nd Year in a Row

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos today recognized 367 schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2020. The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

“Congratulations to this year’s National Blue Ribbon School awardees,” said Secretary DeVos. “It’s a privilege to recognize the extraordinary work you do to meet students’ needs and prepare them for successful careers and meaningful lives.” The coveted National Blue Ribbon Schools award affirms the hard work of educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content. Now in its 38th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed almost 10,000 awards to more than 9,000 schools, with some schools winning multiple awards. Schools are eligible for nomination after five years.

The Education Department recognizes all schools in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, student subgroup scores and graduation rates:

  • Exemplary High Performing Schools – These are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.
  • Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools – These are among their state’s highest performing in closing achievement gaps between a school’s student groups and all students.
EPISD Superintendent Samuel Mijares is pleased to announce that for the 2nd year in a row, Kirchner Elementary has been named a Blue Ribbon School in the category of exemplary performance. Mr. Mijares salutes Kirchner Elementary administration, staff, parents, and students for a tremendous job. Superintendent Mijares and his staff would like to once again congratulate Kirchner for this amazing distinction and knows that this tradition will continue.

National Arts in Education Week Day 4 - Art

Happy National Arts in Education Week! Each day this week, the EPISD Spirit Ambassadors will be recognizing a different form of the Arts that happens in our amazing district!

Day 4 - Art

Art education connects students with their own culture as well as with the wider world. Art instruction helps children with the development of motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision-making, risk-taking, and inventiveness. Visual arts teach learners about color, layout, perspective, and balance: all techniques that are necessary in presentations (visual, digital) of academic work. Integrating art with other disciplines reaches students who might not otherwise be engaged in classwork.

Passed by Congress in 2010 through House Resolution 275, the celebration is designated to bring attention to this cause for elected officials and educational decision makers across the country and to support equitable access to the arts for all students.

National Arts in Education Week takes place annually during the week beginning with the second Sunday of September. This year it falls on September 12 – 18, 2020.
