EPHS' Teens in the Driver Seat campaign goes to the MCJLS

On January 18 and 19, 2017 EPHS Student Council and Leadership class students took their Teens in the Driver Seat campaign to the Maverick County Junior Livestock Show.

This is the first peer-to-peer program for teens that focuses solely on traffic safety and addresses all major risks for this age group. Their goal is to educate the student body about driving safety and decrease teen driving fatalities. There have been too many teen deaths in our community caused by unsafe driving practices and EPHS wants to bring awareness to this problem.  EPHS Student Council and Leadership class students are now implementing the Teens in the Driver Seat® program EPHS.

According to the Teens in the Driver Seat website, "Car crashes kill more young people than any other cause, accounting for nearly half of all teen deaths in America each year. About 2,800 U.S. teens die each year in car crashes; that’s the equivalent of a school bus loaded with teenagers crashing once every week for an entire year."

Eagle Pass to Host 1st Ever TMEA All Region Mariachi Competition

In May, Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) realigned their regions and the new president of our region decided that we needed a mariachi coordinator. Memorial Junior High's very own Band Director, Mr. Jorge Vargas, was elected to that position.
At the August region meeting, Mr. Vargas organized the first ever TMEA Region XI High School Mariachi auditions. At this very same meeting it was voted to have the tryouts and the clinic/concert in Eagle Pass.
On January 28, the auditions were held at CC Winn High School.
The schools that participated are as follows: CC Winn High School, Del Río High School, Brackenridge High School, Southwest High School, Cotulla High School, Somerset High School, and Carrizo Springs High School. The top students were selected via blind audition (the judges can only hear the student) and the all region mariachi group was formed.
It is with great honor to announce that four students from CC Winn High School made the group!
The Mariachi group will have a clinic on February 23rd and 24th with two time Grammy nominated Alex Trevino from the famed Mariachi Los Arrieros Del Valle.
The clinic will culminate in a concert will to be held at 5:30 PM on Friday, February 24 at Eagle Pass Independent School District's Student Activity Center - Fine Arts Building.
The concert will be free to the public, so all are invited to join in the amazing musical stylings of our students!
