Winn Marching Band WINS BIG

On Saturday, March 29, 2015, the C.C. Winn High School Marching Band participated in the Annual International Friendship Parade.

The Mighty Maverick Band under the direction of Mr. Ruben Rodriguez, Mr. Robert Rodriguez, Mr. Alejo Garza, Mr. Raul Perez, Mr. Jorge Vargas, and Mr. John Munoz.  The Mighty Mavs strut down the Streets the of downtown Eagle Pass and showcased their talents to the community.  This year they were awarded the Best Marching Band Award.

 

The band performed classical music, traditional marching music, and even "spiced it up" and played some more familiar tunes including some tejano favorites and cumbias.

 

C.C. Winn Winter Guard at the TECA State Championships

On Saturday, March 28, 2015 the C.C. Winn Winter Guard traveled to Canyon High School in New Braunfels, Texas to compete at the 2015 TECA State Championships. The team competed against 27 other teams in the Scholastic Regional AAA Division from across the state. C.C. Winn Winter Guard team obtained an overall 2^nd place with their show entitled “In Any Other World”.  Congratulations to them on an overall excellent season!

C.C.Winn High School UIL Academics District Meet

On Saturday, March 28, C. C. Winn High School hosted this year’s UIL Academic District meet and took 1^st place overall as a school, putting Eagle Pass back on the map. For the first time in approximately 15 years, C. C. Winn High School set a new record for our city and will be sending 26 contestants to the upcoming UIL Academic Regional meet. Students placing 1^st, 2^nd, and 3^rd will advance to Regionals to take place April 24.

Results are as followed:

In Calculator Applications: Andrea Martinez (1^st place), and Daisy Diaz (6^th place); In Computer Science: David Chavarria (1^st place), Jesus Vasquez (2^nd place), JP Jimenez (3^rd place), and Jose Sanchez(4^th place); In Editorial Writing: Alessandra Pereda (1^st place), and Jennifer Mireles (2^nd place); In Feature Writing: Irene Trevino (1^st place); In Headline Writing: Sofia Casas (2^nd place), Jazmin Hernandez (3^rd place) and Andrea Martinez (5^th place); In Informative Speaking: Stephanie Martinez (2^nd place), and Francisco Becerril (6^th place); In Lincoln Douglas Debate: Paola Garcia-Zuazua (1^st place); In Mathematics: Iram Olivares (1^st place), and Arely Perez (4^th place); In Number Sense: Luis Carmona (1^st place); In News Writing: Jennifer Mireles (1^st place), Andrea Martinez (2^nd place), and Aylin Garcia (3^rd place); In Persuasive Speaking: Adrian Gonzalez (2^nd place), Issac Turrubiate (4^th place), and Juan Ortiz (6^th place); In Poetry Interpretation: Sofia Casas (3^rd place), and Karina Esquivel (5^th place); In Prose Interpretation: Grecia De La Cerda (1^st place), and Frank Chavarria (2^nd place); In Ready Writing: Sofia Casas (1^st place), Alexia Villarreal (3^rd place), and Elvis Morales (5^th place); In Science: Luis Carmona (2^nd place); In Spelling and Vocabulary: Alessandra Pereda (6^th place); In Social Studies: Juan De Hoyos (2^nd place). C. C. Winn also took 1^st place team in Computer Science, Journalism, Mathematics, Number Sense and Speech. It took 2^nd place team in Calculator Applications and Social Studies.

“When I found out that our students took first place, I was overwhelmed with excitement. Such a prestigious achievement is truly outstanding, not just for our school, but for the district as well,” Principal Jesus Diaz-Wever said.  “It’s an amazing feeling to witness our students achieve such an accomplishment.”

C. C. Winn High School competitors and coaches worked diligently to prepare for the District event and for the visiting schools that would attend the meet. 

"Hosting district is a tremendous opportunity to showcase our school, our staff, and our students. We are able to demonstrate to other school districts that C.C. Winn High School has the talent and professionalism to take on any challenges that are presented. All district schools that attended our meet were extremely impressed," UIL Coordinator Jose Jimenez said.

It was a balancing act of preparing the teams to compete, as well as running the competitions simultaneously.

None of this would have been possible without the dedication of the students and the time and support of all the coaches, which resulted in an overall winning team. 

 “I expect nothing but great things from our team at Regionals, and then look forward to what awaits us at State,” Diaz-Wever said.

Mighty Mav Golf Team

Congratulations to the C.C. Winn Mighty Maverick Golf Team led by Head Coach Pat Hernandez and Asst. Coach Juan Antonio Tovar.

The C.C. Winn Golf Girls Team consists of the following players:

Victoria Santana-Carrazco, Paloma Garcia Zua-Zua (Regional Qualifier), Julianna Vasquez, Jessica Valdez, Andrea De Alba

The young ladies from Winn High have placed in every tournament this year, for the exception of one.  Standouts include Paloma Garcia-Zua-Zua.  In her first tournament she won with Julianna Vasquez right behind her taking 2^nd place.  With freezing conditions, these young ladies were able to pull off placing in 6 out of 7 tournaments for 2014-2015 school year. 

With an impressive performance at District Competition, the C.C. Winn Girls Golf team was able to clinch the 4^th place spot right behind Medina Valley, Southside High School, and Uvalde.  These girls place Winn Girls Golf on the map in South Texas and have earned much respect from other district contenders and non-district contenders.

Business Students Travel to Dallas to Participate at the Business Professionals of America State Leadership Conference

Top students from the Eagle Pass High School Career and Technical Education Program attended the Business Professionals of America 2015 State Leadership Conference, in Dallas, Texas, March 4-7, 2015.

Eagle Pass High School chapter members, Monica Alvarez, Shari Cardenas and Monica Ruiz joined over 2,700 other conference delegates from across the state and participated in state level business skill competitions, general sessions, and the state officer candidate campaigns and elections.

“Students from the Texas Association’s Regional Leadership Conference competed at the state level conference. The conference emphasizes business workforce education and training which members of the local chapter of Business Professionals of America at Eagle Pass High School have received,” said chapter advisor, Rachel Sahagun, who teaches Practicum in Business.

Monica A., Shari and Monica R. participated in the Small Business Management Team competition and earned a respectable 6th place among thirty five teams from across the state of Texas. The BPA members are all currently employed by EPISD as well as other local businesses, including The Law Offices of Langley and Banack and Ruiz and Associates.

Business Professionals of America is a national organization for middle school, high school, and college students preparing for careers in business and office occupations. The organization’s activities and programs complement classroom instruction by giving students practical experience through application of the skills learned at school. Business Professionals of America acts as a cohesive agent in the nationwide networking of education and business and industry, and is contributing to the preparation of a world-class workforce through the advancement of leadership, citizenship, academic, and technological skills.

Principal Mr. Vale Moreno, EPHS and Ms. Ana Laura Castillon, Career and Technical Education Director extended their congratulations to the participants for a job well done.

One Act Bi- District Competition

C.C. Winn will present scenes from “A Streetcar Named Desire,” the District 29-5A Alternate play to Bi-District UIL One Act Play competition, as part of “A Night of One Act Plays” with EPJH (“Asylum”), Memorial JH (“The Crane Wife”) and EPHS (“Asylum”) – the four plays begin at 6 p.m.Thursday, April 2, 2015.
