On May 30, 2017, C. C. Winn High School's Student Council recognized the six outstanding officers that helped govern the school for the 2016-2017 academic school year. They were honored at the annual StuCo banquet in front of their peers, administration and special guests with several plaques for all their achievements, as well as time and dedication given to their organization and school.
This group of leaders started working diligently at the senior graduation concession stand back in June of 2016, only one week after being installed as officers. In July, they then attended a week long advanced leadership camp at Trinity University in San Antonio where they developed skills needed to effectively lead a Student Council. Working together through 12 hour days that week helped them to gain insight into their personal leadership strengths and begin to map out a plan for what they wanted to accomplish when back on campus.
The summer was cut short when they spent their last two weeks of vacation working on a script, costumes, décor and managing a group of student volunteers to produce the annual Student Council Welcome Back Teacher Breakfast. The theme that they focused on was “The Wizard of Uz” and “There’s No Place Like Winn”. This helped set the tone for what was to be a very successful year full of school spirit and an incredible amount of pride.
The Student Council officers and members worked tirelessly for the next nine months to help better the environment at C.C. Winn High School as well as the great city of Eagle Pass. They organized spirited fall events like Homecoming week and pep rallies, as well as coordinate city-wide holiday events like Christmas on Main Street. The council spearheaded projects for sensitive subjects like bullying, suicide and equality. Winn's anti-bullying initiative #IMPACT week, in which the awareness of bullying is brought to light, was even adopted by the school district in the spring. StuCo donated thousands of dollars to multiple charities and organizations and the officers worked especially hard on Colors for a Cure (a new cancer-based project to raise money for the local Candles for Life organization) where C.C. Winn came together and donated $5,000 to those currently affected by cancer in our community. These and many, many more school activities and projects contributed to a successful year for the Mavericks.
The C.C. Winn Student Council attended the 81st Texas Association of Student Councils Annual State Conference in April where they received STATEWIDE recognition for their outstanding dedication to leadership, service, and school activities that serve the purpose to not only better improve the school of C.C. Winn High School, but to also serve the citizens of Eagle Pass.
They were recognized by the Texas Association of Student Councils (TASC) as a SWEEPSTAKES Council for the 10th time in only 11 years of being Mavericks! Sweepstakes Councils are recognized for their service in the following committees: Outstanding Student Council; Community Service; Drugs, Alcohol, Safety, and Health (D.A.S.H); Energy and Environment; and in Pride and Patriotism. C.C. Winn High School School Student Council was one of ONLY 230 Student Councils in the state of Texas to receive this honorable recognition.
The sponsors and newly elected student officers for the upcoming school year would like to take the time to thank the 2016-2017 StuCo cabinet for all of their hard work put forth this year.
