Monday, December 10th, Mr. Laurence’s AP Chemistry class at C.C. Winn High School worked in groups to investigate inter molecular forces.
The class conducted a lab and was given five solvents (distilled water, acetone, ethanol, methanol, ammonia) that they were tasked to investigate which solvent best separates the pigments of color in a mixture of food dye.
They analyzed the affinity of the dye as it reacted with the solvent by using chromatography. Chromatography is a process that could be used to separate various components in a mixture.
This process relies on that different molecules behave a certain way depending on the solvent.
Way to go Mavericks!
