On Tuesday, October 15, 2019, C.C. Winn High School's AG Mechanics class practiced stick welding beads.
Mr. Charles Purcell, the AG Mechanics teacher, instructed his students how to properly and safely stick weld a bead.
Mr. Purcell outlined the importance of knowing how to bead by explaining that it was the first step to stick welding two metals together. The students were paired up and assigned a station with a welding machine.
Each student was required to wear proper attire and received a welding helmet, safety glasses, welding gloves, soapstone, pieces of steel, and several rods.
After a clear demonstration of how to stick weld a bead from Mr. Purcell, the students began practicing their beads.
Mr. Purcell, while supervising his students, was able to aid each student with any mistakes they were making and give them tips to make their beads stronger.
After each student had several beads welded, Mr. Purcell gave a demonstration of how to clean a weld using a chipping hammer and a steel wire brush.
Every student was excited to learn and quick to try beading and cleaning welds themselves.
