Mrs. Duran, over at Winn High, continues to make learning about science fun!
This time, her 1st and 2nd period Biology classes performed the “Smelly Balloons Lab”.
Students have been learning about cellular transport, diffusion, and osmosis that involve the cell membrane.
Friday, October 12th, they conducted an investigative process which consisted of identifying smells.
For this lab, different food extracts were placed in balloons and students were asked to guess the scents in the balloons.
The balloons mimicked the cell membrane, which allows only certain substances to come in and out.
In this case, the scents came out and the liquid extracts remained in the balloon.
This also demonstrated diffusion where substances move from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration.
Needless to say, this lab was a total success, as the students were able to put to practice everything that they learned and they had fun while doing it!
