When Mavericks are needed, they stand at attention. The CPS Child Welfare Board contacted Mrs. Idalia Salinas, WHS English II teacher, to help them make their foster children's Christmas dreams come true. There are 111 foster children in Maverick County. Foster children are removed from their homes when there is abuse or neglect. Many times the children are removed without being able to take any of their toys or belongings. As soon as our students heard about the need in our community, they wanted to do everything they could to help. Mavericks embody the spirit of the holiday season: the idea of giving instead of receiving. Mrs. Salinas asked for help among the Winn teachers and they came to the rescue including Mrs. Monica Diaz, Mrs. Veronica Alva-Rodriguez and her Winn Guard, Ms. Angie Holguin, Mrs. Marvelia Flores, Mrs. Alicia Gonzalez, Mrs. Rebecca Mancha and her Interact Club, and Mrs. Denisse Villarreal and the Silverline dance team. Each one of the teachers spoke to their students about the importance of giving to the less fortunate especially during the holiday season. They collected three gifts per foster child, which made the CPS workers so appreciative and excited for the children. Mavericks have such big hearts. WHS teachers are proud of their students. Go Mavericks!
