On April 10, 2015 the C.C. Winn Jazz
Band traveled to Austin Texas to compete in the University Of Texas Longhorn
Jazz Festival on April 11, 2015. The Jazz band, under the direction of Mr.
Alejo Garza Jr., took the stage early Saturday morning and opened with All Of
Me which featured Senior Brianna Martinez on Vocals. The second tune was ‘Arnge
Drank, a Funk tune which featured Seniors Amado Esqueda on Piano, Jaime Luna on
guitar, Linda Talamantes on drums, Rey Morales on bass trombone, Valentin
Salinas on trumpet, and Junior Abel Gonzales on saxophone. The Jazz Band closed
with Night In Tunisia which featured Rey Morales, Linda Talamantes, Brianna
Martinez on Piano, and Valentin Salinas once more. Every student that was
featured received an Outstanding Soloist Award. The Jazz Band was awarded 2nd
place out of 15 Jazz Bands who competed in their category. Once the competition
finished the students enjoyed the performance of The University of Texas Jazz
Orchestra, which featured world-renowned drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts. The C.C.
Winn Music Program is very proud of the student’s hard work throughout the
semester, placing at a competition such as the UT Longhorn Jazz Festival is a
clear example that hard work pays off.
