Tuesday, February 19th, for their weekly "Talkative Tuesday" discussion, the students in Winn's Leadership class participated in a fun activity that focused on the effects stereotyping.
It's very easy to misread a person or situation based off of gender misconceptions or assumptions on social class.
Students anonymously brought in one stuffed animal that was near and dear to them.
Some brought in treasured mementos from their childhood, and others brought in more recent gifts from friends and loved ones.
Students had to walk around the table and make guesses on the owner for each toy based purely on context clues.
Afterwards, the names listed by each item were read aloud, and then the true identities were revealed as the stuffed animals were reunited with their rightful owners. Some were glittery and expensive while others were very worn and small.
The majority of the students in the class are female, and only one male student participated.
Mrs. Olivares-Wueste even joined in to help mix up the age group.
The discussion following the activity focused on how all the students had to go off of were stereotypes as they tried to label the "boy" toy and who would probably own a "Build-A-Bear".
There were three stuffed animals that absolutely no one guessed correctly on, and the students were amazed at how surprised they were when they saw everyone with the items they actually brought in.
