Winn Chemistry classes brought the spunk of Halloween into the lesson of the day!
As the purpose of this activity was presented in their pre-lab, students received notes on the process, and of course, lab safety.
In addition, the lesson was also introduced through an informational YouTube video.
Prior to completing this project, students enjoyed carving their uniquely designed pumpkins to prepare them for the flame test lab.
They let out their artistic side by carving a wide array of designs.
Once their pumpkins were carved, students used foil paper to cover the inside base of the pumpkins.
The next step consisted of them adding metal salt and methanol to ignite the flame.
Their task was to observe the different colors created by the flame to be able to determine the metal ion present as they saw in the YouTube video they had previously watched.
Taking it a step further by making the task more challenging, students were also assigned to identify a mixture of two metal ions.
To say this lab was as much fun as it was educational is an understatement! Students had a blast throughout the activity.
Keep up the excellent work, Mrs. Martínez!
