Friday, March 8th, Mrs. Martínez’ Chemistry class took part of the traditional Flame Tests Lab to observe the beautiful color metal ions give off.
Mrs. Martínez prepared an elaborate lesson to illustrate the purpose of this activity.
Students received notes on the procedure of the assignment, did a pre-lab, and reviewed safety procedures to ensure a safe result.
In addition to all that, the lesson was also illustrated through an informational YouTube video.
After ensuring that the students understood the purpose of the project and the procedures, the next step consisted of them adding metal salt and methanol to ignite the flame.
Their task was to observe the different colors created by the flame to be able to determine the metal ion present as they saw in the YouTube video they had previously watched.
Taking it a step further by making the task more challenging, students were also assigned to identify a mixture of two metal ions.
This project was as fun as it was educational and students had a blast throughout the activity!
Great job, Mrs. Martínez!
Go Mavericks!
