At Winn High, students in Mrs. Pérez’s Chemistry class measure up.
As an introduction to a unit on measurements, students engaged in an activity to determine the importance of having standards to conduct measurements.
Through this activity students appreciated the extent of the importance of these standards in everyday life.
Thursday, September 20th, students were broken off into groups and were asked to establish their own unit of measurement to test on certain classroom items.
The tools that students used to measure ranged from using their own foot, pencil, keys, etc.
After their tools and measurements were established, they were asked to attempt to duplicate the measurements that the various groups created using the original unit of measurement.
Students collected their own data and compared the results with that of the other groups.
Through their findings, they realized that there were discrepancies with some measurements while others reached a higher sense of accuracy depending on the tools they used.
They also realized that it is impossible to always provide units in measurements.
Students reached the conclusion that implementing measurement standards is crucial in order to conduct reports with accuracy.
The students in Mrs. Pérez’s class are now ready to learn about accuracy, precision, and significant figures in measurements.
