WHS Builds A Case

Friday, February 22nd, the English II Pre-AP students in Ms. Cruz’ class at CC Winn were asked the question: “Do you think it is correct for parents to discipline their children?”
Daily, students are asked debatable topics to help prepare them for whatever persuasive prompt might be present on their state assessment.
The students researched facts and effects that come with physical and verbal discipline, and they looked up the differences between discipline, punishment, and abuse.
Students also made reference to books they previously read along their academic career, such as “A Child Called It” to support their arguments.
Students are individually building an argument for their case and next week students will gather into groups to debate the topic.
This activity should help students learn the importance of addressing counter arguments, being detailed when explaining themselves, and using assertive, persuasive tones when writing a persuasive essay.
